US education system consists of elementary, secondary and higher school. There is also some kind of preschool education in nursery schools. The education is compulsory from 6 till 16 or 18. It involves 12 years of schooling. The school year is divided into terms. Usually the different steps of school have separate buildings. In secondary school the children can select some subjects according to their main interests. After graduating from school young people try to enter the Universities. Usually they must pay for their studies there.
